It Felt Wrong Not to Do It
We are big fans of waxed chains. At the same time, we have always found it very tedious to degrease the chain, cassette, chainrings and derailleur pulleys first after buying a new bike. We want to spare our customers this hassle and at the same time ensure that all Avona bikes deliver the best performance in line with our philosophy. That's why all our chains first go to CeramicSpeed in Denmark, where they are degreased and waxed with UFO chain wax.
Solid Performance Gains
Drivetrain efficiency helps in every situation in which you are pedaling. Whether you are riding fast on the flat or grinding up a steep climb, you will benefit. Even when new, one to two percent more of your power reaches the rear wheel than with a clean, factory-greased chain. If dust and dirt come into play, this advantage can quickly double, as the waxed chain remains much cleaner and does not let any dirt into the inside of the chain.
More Time to Ride
We all know it: keeping an oiled chain clean is a real Sisyphean task. And once it gets really dirty and black, it takes a lot of cleaning to get the chain, derailleur, sprockets, and frame clean. With a waxed chain, you can avoid all that. In most cases, it is sufficient to wipe the chain with a microfiber cloth and every 300 km apply some UFO drip lube (one bottle is included with each of our bikes).
What you should avoid in any case is applying regular chain oil. This will destroy all the benefits of the UFO treatment.
You Will Save Money
As Zero Friction Cycling calculates, a waxed chain is much cheaper in the long term, as chains and especially the very expensive cassettes only show a fraction of the wear that you would expectwith an oiled chain. Over 10,000 km, we are talking about several thousand dollars saved with a top-level groupset.
